Where to Stay in Solvang: Hadsten House Inn

From the outside, discerning travelers may be quick to snub Hadsten House Inn in Solvang because, let’s face it, it looks like a motel. When I first saw pictures of the hotel on Tripadvisor, I almost bypassed the property because of its no-frills motel looks. But as I continued to weed through pictures and read reviews, I realized that Hadsten House Inn is anything but the typical run-of-the-mill roadside motel which is why I eventually chose to book a stay there for our wine-tasting getaway late last summer.

As it turns out, the inn was recently renovated, making it one of the nicer boutique hotels in Solvang.  Our room on the hotel’s upper level featured cozy décor, a comfortable king bed, and an electric fireplace which we put to use at night despite the lingering summertime heat.

And while our bathroom was devoid of marble and pristine glass shower doors, it was clean and had modern fixtures. I may be obsessed with bathrooms, but really, I don’t ask for much!

The hotel is situated on Mission Drive, Solvang’s main drag, and is a less-than-five-minute drive from the city center, shopping, restaurants and some of the valley’s city-based tasting rooms. The property even features its own micro vineyard – a small patch out front where some rather luscious-looking grapes are being harvested.

Although Hadsten House Inn is right down the street from Paula’s Pancake House, considering that we’re always looking for ways to cut costs when traveling, we were happy to find that the nightly rate includes breakfast. And the hotel serves a full American breakfast – no skimping with the typical continental toast and boiled eggs.

The onsite Bistro restaurant also serves dinner daily and features an ever-expanding wine list (of course). We dined at other restaurants for dinner so didn’t get to try the Bistro, but knowing that it was a convenient option was a plus.

Another great amenity that I’m keeping in mind for future stays at the inn is its spa, Haven Day Spa, which offers a wide range of massages and body therapies. For larger groups, private spa parties can be arranged which is giving me ideas for future girlfriend getaways.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at Hadsten House Inn, and at the time we booked, the rate was around $130 per night which fit well within our budget.
